This text is a preview of History of the Reception of Hegel, volume I, to be published in 2026 by Reflexivity Press.
Equipped with this compass, you can now understand the first great fragmentation: the disintegration of the Hegelian school immediately after Hegel’s death in 1831.
You will see how the three main directions - Right, Left, Center - each grasped one aspect:
- The Right grasped systematic completeness and affirmative sublation
- The Left grasped the critical power of differentiation and negation
- The Center grasped the necessity of mediation - without the methodological means to achieve it
You will understand why this disintegration was not avoidable but systematically necessary. And you will have the tools to judge: Which criticisms really hit Hegel? Which hit only a distorted image? And which grasp productive moments that need to be further developed?
The detective principle we have gotten to know will accompany us through the entire history of reception: how various thinkers gathered various “clues,” arrived at different “coherent pictures” - and how we today can try to integrate these pictures themselves back into a coherent whole.
