Why This Introduction?
This text is a preview of History of the Reception of Hegel, volume I, to be published in 2026 by Reflexivity Press.
Notice what is happening right now. You are reading these lines and, without deciding to, checking: Is this true? Is this coherent? Does this make sense for my project of understanding the history of Hegel’s reception? This checking runs its course without your having to resolve to do it. You are already practicing what this introduction wants to make explicit: critical, systematic thinking in its living, enacted form.
Anyone who wants to understand the history of Hegel’s reception today faces a double challenge. Hegel’s critics - from Feuerbach through Marx to Kierkegaard, from Schopenhauer through Nietzsche to postmodernism - often presuppose an image of Hegel that, on closer inspection, turns out to be a distortion. At the same time, the reception developed productive insights that genuinely advance or correct Hegel’s own position.
To understand which criticisms actually hit their target and which miss it, to grasp which attempts at integration are fruitful and which fail, we need a compass. This chapter offers a concise introduction to Hegel’s logic and its methodological foundations, as understood in the interpretation underlying this work.
An important preliminary remark on condensation: If logic is already the absolute condensation of the world and of our thinking into logical structures, then a further condensation into a few pages is naturally only a tiny excerpt. If, by the end of reading this introduction, some things seem insufficiently clear, too superficial, or too abstract - that lies in the nature of the matter. Neither would Hegel have written his logic across several hundred pages, nor would I have written a commentary on it, if everything could be adequately presented in a few pages. This introduction is a compass, not a substitute for engaging with the logic itself.
