hegel.net is a non-commercial reference site on the philosophy of G.W.F. Hegel. It is run by one person, sells nothing, demands nothing, and collects nothing about you.
These terms are short because the site is simple. Where something remains unclear, write to info @ hegel.net.
1. What this site is
A collection of texts, translations, presentations, and reference tables. Freely readable, without registration, without user accounts, without advertising.
There is nothing here to buy and nothing requiring registration. Operation is free of charge; no compensation of any kind is requested for its use, whether in money or otherwise.
2. Offers from third parties
Individual pages mention audiobooks, recordings, or posters offered by Martin Grimsmann and Lutz Hansen.
These offers are not part of this site. A contract regarding them comes about exclusively with the providers named there. I am neither a provider nor an intermediary, do not fulfill orders, and receive no commission or other compensation for these transactions.
Questions, complaints, and withdrawals should be directed to the respective provider.
3. What you may do with the content
Each contribution carries its own license, stated at its foot:
- Zero Marginal Cost License — most contributions by Kai Froeb, as well as the explanatory texts beneath the triangles. Free to read, to copy, and to distribute digitally; free for teaching and research; unrestricted right to quote. Not to be sold and not to be distributed commercially.
- Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 — contributions whose authors have chosen it.
- All rights reserved — third-party contributions that appear here with permission.
Hegel’s own texts are in the public domain. Translations, commentaries, and the structuring of the system are not: they are original work and carry the license named on the respective page.
Quoting is permitted in all cases, in accordance with the usual rules of scholarly work and with attribution of the source.
4. Translations
The pages originated in German. The language versions were produced semi-automatically with the help of machine translation and subsequently revised.
This way of working has uncovered many errors that had gone unnoticed in the older versions. Freedom from error cannot, nevertheless, be assured — if only because Hegel’s concepts have no fixed equivalent in any language.
For Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, and Arabic, no one has yet been found who could professionally review the translations. I can therefore give no assurance whatsoever regarding these versions; they are intended as orientation, not as evidence.
In case of doubt, the German version governs.
5. Accuracy
This site is a scholarly aid, not an authority. Texts may contain errors in transcription, translation, or interpretation.
Nothing here constitutes legal, medical, financial, or other professional advice.
If you find an error, please report it. Corrections are welcome and usually made within a few days.
6. Links to other sites
This site links to many others. I have no influence over their content, availability, or handling of your data, and accept no responsibility for them. A link is not a recommendation.
7. Availability
The site is provided as it is and as it happens to be accessible. No availability is guaranteed; pages may change or disappear. For a reliable citation, please state the date on which you read the page.
8. Liability
Nothing in these terms limits liability where the law does not permit a limitation — in particular not in cases of intent, gross negligence, or injury to life, body, or health.
Otherwise, no liability is accepted for damages arising from the use or unavailability of this site or from information found here.
9. Machine access and AI training
Reading this site by machine is permitted. Using its texts for training AI systems is permitted within the scope of the licenses named under item 3 — subject to the condition stated there that the resulting systems not be used to distort this work or to turn it against its meaning.
Not permitted is access that burdens the server: mass retrieval at high speed or repeated complete downloading. The site is available as a complete package — ask for it and you will receive it.
10. Data protection
No personal data is collected beyond what every web server logs; these logs are anonymized. The details are set out in the privacy policy.
11. Governing law
Portuguese law applies, excluding the conflict-of-laws rules and the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods.
If you are a consumer, you retain in any case the protection of the mandatory provisions of your country of residence.
12. Changes
These terms may change as the site changes. The version appearing on this page, with the date given below, is always authoritative.
13. If you believe a right of yours has been violated
Should you believe that one of your rights — a copyright, a personality right, or another — is being violated on this site, please write to me. Name the page and the passage in question.
Justified complaints are addressed without delay, usually within a few days. Where the matter is doubtful, the passage concerned is first removed and then clarified.
A message is enough and is the fastest way.
