Hegel (Logic of Essence, synonym for appearance)

The phenomenon (Greek *phainomenon* - that which appears) is identical with appearance in Hegel. It is not mere illusion, but manifestation of essence. "Essence must appear" - there is no essence behind the phenomena. The phenomenon is the actuality of essence. Example: natural phenomena are not deception, but the self-presentation of the laws of nature.

Origin

Kant: phenomenon (appearance) vs. noumenon (thing-in-itself). Hegel: no thing-in-itself - essence is its appearances. Husserl later: "To the things themselves" - back to the phenomena.
