The sphere of subjectivity in which the separation of the I and the object is experienced (Ch. 21.1, 29.2). In contrast to unconscious life (Ch. 19), consciousness brings forth reflection, which distinguishes the object from the subject in order to know it (theoretical cognition) or to shape it (practical will).
