The Open Horizon
This text is a preview of History of the Reception of Hegel, volume I, to be published in 2026 by Reflexivity Press.
The present volume has told the story of the task from 1831 to 1945 - from its immediate fragmentation through productive challenges to existential catastrophe.
Volume II will show how postwar philosophy dealt with this - from Gadamer through Adorno to Brandom and Stekeler-Weithofer, from Kojève through Derrida to the current Chinese reception of Hegel.
The central question remains open: Is systematic philosophy still possible in the 21st century - after Auschwitz, after postmodernism, after globalization?
The answer cannot be given theoretically. It must be carried out practically - through attempts like the one undertaken in the Logic commentary, through critical examination, through continued self-correction, through resistance to new forms of barbarism.
The reception of Hegel is not complete. It continues - as long as there is critical thought.
And after Auschwitz we know: critical thought is not a luxury but a necessity. Philosophy is not an academic game but resistance against the return of the barbaric.
